On the 20th anniversary of the U.S. Congressional mandate that the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) deems to be “general standards of decency and respect” in awarding grants, the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School in collaboration with the National Coalition Against Censorship, present two panel discussions and a video interview project evaluating censorship and arts funding today.
Moderated by Laura Flanders of GritTV,
the event will host prominent artists, directors of non-profit arts organizations, art dealers and founders of alternative spaces.
Participants will discuss how the introduction of the decency clause and Culture Wars, have conditioned free speech and creativity, as well as self-censorship and how moral concepts of the American public in terms of decency and respect for values and beliefs, has changed over the past twenty years.
The first panel will take place on September 15, 2010 – 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the The New School, Tishman Auditorium, 66 West 12 Street, New York. Admission will be free.
The second panel happens on September 22, 2010 at the same time and place.
