Watch the Videos from the Future Generation Art Prize Award Ceremony 2010

Yesterday, December 10, 2010, the winner of the Main Prize of the Future Generation Art Prize 2010, was announced at the Pinchuk Art Center in Kiev.
Cinthia Marcelle, from Brazil, received the prize in the value of $100000.
A special prize of $20000 was attributed to Mircea Nicolae, from Romania.
The FGAP is a biennial award established by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation for artists worldwide between the ages of 18 and 35.

How Obscene is This! The Decency Clause Turns 20

On the 20th anniversary of the U.S. Congressional mandate that the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) deems to be “general standards of decency and respect” in awarding grants, the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School in collaboration with the National Coalition Against Censorship, present two panel discussions and a video interview project evaluating censorship and arts funding today.

Moderated by Laura Flanders of GritTV, the event will host prominent artists, directors of non-profit arts organizations, art dealers and founders of alternative spaces.
Participants will discuss how the introduction of the decency clause and Culture Wars, have conditioned free speech and creativity, as well as self-censorship and how moral concepts of the American public in terms of decency and respect for values and beliefs, has changed over the past twenty years.

The first panel will take place on September 15, 2010 – 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the The New School, Tishman Auditorium, 66 West 12 Street, New York. Admission will be free.
The second panel happens on September 22, 2010 at the same time and place.

The panel discussions are complemented by the film screening Indecent Exposure on September 27, at the School of Visual Arts, SVA Theatre, 333 West 23rd Street, at 6:30 p.m.

Museums in the 21st Century, presented by MoMA's Director Glenn Lowry at ACMI

On the 24th of June 2010 (2h30 pm), the Australian Center For The Moving Image will host a presentation at the ACMI Cinemas lead by the Director of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Glenn Lowry.
Based on MoMA's activities, Glenn will classify the changing aspects of art collecting, exhibiting, commissioning work and how institutions are collaborating with the intent of expanding their exhibition space and offer to their visitors, thus providing an idea of the current trends and future moves of museums in this new century.
The event will include a panel session chaired by ACMI Director Tony Sweeney and featuring Director of Kaldor Public Art Projects John Kaldor, artist, academic and writer Robert Nelson, and Director of the MCA, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor.
The panel will pinpoint how institutions are shifting their artistic focus and realigning their programmes to maintain relevance in a time of rapid change, including the ways digital technology and audience demands are recreating the sector.
Admission for Museums in the 21st Century is free and tickets will be available on the day from the Tickets & Information Desk.

World Environment Day 2010 and the Arts

In the last years the discussion about the environment has been brought to the public's attention and nowadays people start to be more aware of how they can contribute to minimize the human influence over it.
Artists can play an important role, be it through art itself or by using it to support environmental campaigns.

"Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino" by J.M.W.Turner to be Auctioned at Sotheby's



Completed in 1839 by Joseph Mallord William Turner RA and mesauring 90.2 by 122cm (35.5 by 48 in), the oil on canvas "Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino" is going to be offered for auction at the Sotheby's Evening Sale of Old Master and Early British Paintings in London on Wednesday, 7 July 2010.
Firstly owned by Turner's close friend and patron scottish landowner and collector Hugh Munro of Novar, who bought the work directly from the artist’s Royal Academy exhibition of 1839, the painting was then acquired at auction by the 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847-1929) and his new wife Hannah Rothschild, while on their honeymoon, for the sum of 4,450 gns.
Loaned since 1978 to the National Gallery of Scotland, it was part of the exhibition "Turner and Italy".
Now it's going to be offered for sale at Sotheby's with an estimated value of £12-18 million.

Square - New Form of Payment Arriving Soon



Still in its beta version Square will permit you to use your iPhone to receive paymentsm by simply pulgging a really small card reader into your iPhone's audio jack.
There will be no need to sign up for expensive equipment, contracts and paying high fees.
You will be even able to confirm the buyer's identity in the spot and a receipt will be made available right away.
This card reader will also work in some other mobile devices with an audio jack, such as iPod Touch, BlackBerry and Android based phones.
According to ReadWriteWeb's channel ReadWriteStart, the card reader will cost $1 and the company will charge a fee of 2.9% for each transaction.
This due out soon service will be quite useful for artists who participate in art fairs, or have their own studio sale.
